Temporal dynamics of stress-induced changes in cytokine production during an anti-viral immune response in mice

Acute stress is known to suppress specific immunity. The frequent occurrence of acute stress under natural conditions suggests that impairment of immunological resistance to infectious diseases should be avoided. To explore how the specific immune response copes with acute stress, we investigated the effect of a single social defeat (loss of a fight) of male mice, given at 3 days after inoculation with a live virus. Defeated mice showed decreased lymph node cellularity and ex-vivo cytokine production at day one after defeat. Two days later these immune measures had returned to non-stressed control levels. The restoration of ex-vivo cytokine production from suppressed to non-stressed control levels could be mimicked in-vitro by stimulation of lymph node and spleen cell cultures with live virus. It is hypothesized that persisting virus constitutes a functional feedback to restore anti-viral immunity after suppression due to acute stress.
